Top Rams

Top Rams' lists

The Top rams lists allow purebred producers to easily find the best evaluated rams on GenOvis program. Here you will find only the top 10% animals for each breed: those we named top rams. To appear on these lists, maternal rams must be in the top 10% for Maternal Index, Maternal Ultrasound index, Maternal Higher Prolificacy index or Maternal Ultrasound Higher Prolificacy index and paternal rams must be in the top 10% for the Gain index or the Carcass index.

These rams are bred by purebred producers to produce ewe and ram of high genetic quality. Genetic progress for specific breed's traits increases more quickly by breeding together ewes and rams with good genetics.

To get the owner’s name of animals present on these lists, look at the Participants List located on the home page. You will find there the name and the coordinates of the owners.

Top Ram Reports – General Points

Introduction

The Centre d’expertise en production ovine du Québec (CEPOQ) is pleased to publish the genetic evaluation for rams evaluated with the GenOvis on-farm genetic testing program. These reports contain the lists of rams with a Maternal Index (MAT), a Maternal Ultrasound index (MAT-U), a Maternal Higher Prolificacy index (MAT-HP) or a Maternal Ultrasound Higher Prolificacy index (MAT-UHP) higher or equal to the 90th percentile for the breed for the maternal breed, and the Gain Index (GAIN) or the Carcass Index (CARC) higher or equal to the 90th percentile for the breed for the paternal breed.

Publication Criteria

The report is divided in 2 sections. The first section includes rams with progeny and the second section the ram-lambs without progeny. In order to be included in the report, the rams and the ram-lambs must:

- Be purebred.

- Be recorded in the GenOvis database.

- Be the property of a breeder enrolled in the program in 2019.

Rams with progeny must:

- Be born since 2009 (disposed or not).

- Have at least one offspring evalutated on the GenOvis program.

Ram-lambs without progeny must:

- Be born between January 2017 and October2019.

- Have a valid 50 and 100-day weights recorded in the GenOvis database and not be disposed.

WARNING

Ram-lambs listed in the Top Rams with No Progeny lists have no progeny recorded in the GenOvis database; the EPDs and selection indexes of these young rams are more likely to change with time since the evaluations are generally based on less information.

Animal Sort Order

In these reports, the rams are sorted in descending order of Maternal index (MAT), Maternal Ultrasound index (MAT-U), Maternal Higher Prolificacy index (MAT-HP) or Maternal Ultrasound Higher Prolificacy index (MAT-UHP) for maternal breed and in descending order of Gain index (GAIN) or Carcass index (CARC) for paternal breed. The rams are sorted youngest to oldest.

Additional Information

The rank presents the ranking of the animal within all animals listed in the report.

Owner refers to the GenOvis program identification number of the owner of the animal in the system at the time of the main run. Please consult the GenOvis participant list to get the farm coordonnies.

IMPORTANT

To publish breed's top rams' list, there must be a minimum of 3 producers who have evaluated a total of 100 ewes in the genetic program during the year.
