The GenOvis program is a home test sheep
genetic program allowing sheep breeders to
identify and select high genetic potential
individuals. GenOvis ensures the significant
improvement of flocks’ genetic quality and,
therefore, the efficiency of Canadian sheep farms.
The GenOvis program was created by the Ontario
Government after it abandoned the national Record
of Performance program (ROP) in 1998. The following
year, CEPOQ joined the program to offer that service
to Québec’s breeders. After a request from the
Société des éleveurs de mouton de race pure du
Québec and from the Canadian Sheep Breeders Association,
CEPOQ initiated the process to offer home/on farm sheep
genetic testing to all Canadian sheep breeders. This
service is now available throughout the country.
